How does hypnotherapy work for bad habits?

Bad habits are repetitive behaviors that often become automatic patterns in the subconscious mind. Even when someone wants to stop, the behavior can continue because it has become linked to stress, emotions, or daily routines.

Hypnosis helps address these patterns by working with focused attention and suggestion to update the underlying mental associations connected to the habit.

During the session we identify the triggers, beliefs, and emotional patterns that maintain the behavior. A new internal script is then developed to support healthier responses and replace the old habit with a more constructive pattern.

Hypnosis can strengthen your ability to pause, choose a different response, and reinforce new habits over time.

What types of habits can hypnosis help with?

Hypnosis is often used to help people change habits such as:

• nail biting
• hair pulling (trichotillomania)
• skin picking
• smoking or vaping
• stress-related eating
• repetitive anxious behaviors

Hypnosis can also support the development of positive habits, such as exercising consistently, eating more mindfully, or improving sleep routines.

What happens during a hypnosis session?

A typical session begins with a conversation to understand how the habit developed, what triggers it, and what change you want to create.

We then design a set of suggestions and visualizations tailored specifically to you.

The hypnosis portion of the session places you in a deeply relaxed but focused state of attention, where these new ideas and images can be integrated more effectively.

The hypnosis segment of the session is recorded and provided to you as a personalized audio so you can listen to it several times over the following weeks. This reinforcement helps strengthen the new habit pattern.

You will also learn self-hypnosis techniques that you can use on your own to manage urges, stay calm, and support long-term change.

How many sessions are needed?

For many habits, two hypnosis sessions are recommended to help reinforce the new pattern and address any remaining triggers.

Some clients experience significant change after the first session, while others benefit from additional reinforcement depending on the habit and how long it has been present.

Sessions are available online via Zoom, as well as in person in Rome and New York City, depending on my travel schedule.
